Making a Difference
in a Child’s Life

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurological learning disability that makes it difficult for children and adults to read, write and spell. It affects up to one out of every five people and affects boys and girls equally.

Children left with untreated dyslexia often suffer devastating personal consequences and are more likely than their nondyslexic peers to drop out of high school. Research reveals that children with untreated dyslexia can become underachieving adults unable to contribute to society at their fullest capacity.

is Dyslexia treatable?

Without proper intervention, dyslexia can lead to literacy, academic, social and self-esteem difficulties. While it is a treatable condition, millions of sufferers go without help due to lack of finances or access to services.

That’s where the Children’s Dyslexia Centers can help.

The Children’s Dyslexia Centers are equipping students with the skills and confidence they need to approach learning with eagerness and without fear. Our proven therapeutic techniques have a documented success rate, generally resulting in significant gain in reading level.

Why we do it

I feel truly blessed to have found this program. Without it, my child would have been left behind.
Betty, Parent
The big thing I have learned at the Children's Dyslexia Center is that I am not dumb. It may take me longer to read, to study, to write, but I can do it.
Josh, Graduate
It is difficult to put into words what it means to find a beacon of light in our struggle to find help for our child.
Robert, Parent
If it weren't for the Center helping me, I would not love school as much as I do now.
Autumn, Graduate
My training at the Children's Dyslexia Center has proven invaluable to my success in teaching these bright children with learning disabilities.

Our Story

DCC Leaf Logo

In 1994, the Scottish Rite Freemasons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction partnered with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Language Disorders Unit to launch a major endeavor to help ease the life-long challenges faced by children with dyslexia. Until this program was launched, no other national charity had adopted this critical need as a major concern.

Scottish Rite Freemasons made the following philanthropic pledges:

  • To help children with dyslexia learn to read and to reach their full potential;
  • To help their families end the frustration, guilt and disruption caused by dyslexia;
  • To help communities by developing Children’s Dyslexia Centers to help children succeed in and out of school.

Today, the program is nationally recognized for its efforts to help children and their families overcome the painful obstacles of dyslexia. Our more than 40 Dyslexia Centers in 13 states provide intervention at reduced or no charge to children from early elementary through high school who have a profile suggesting dyslexia. Children are eligible regardless of economic status. The positive impact of early intervention on the lives of these children and their families is enormous and inspires our commitment to this program.

The Children’s Dyslexia Centers is a charity of Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Freemasonry. Scottish Rite Freemasonry is an organization of men dedicated to improving themselves and their communities.

Since 1994, members and supporters of Scottish Rite, NMJ have served the Children’s Dyslexia Centers as board members, directors, tutors, donors, fundraisers, and much more. Without the support of this dedicated group, the Children’s Dyslexia Centers would not have been able to serve so many children for so long.
